Inadequacy
The number one observation I have on why people buy stuff, is the feeling of inadequacy in life, the feeling on incompleteness either on a micro or macro level. By owning this bag, it might make me look or feel wealthy, by spending money on something, I feel capable in making myself feel good about myself. And in owning puts me on par or better than others.

Avoiding
There is something bigger in my life that is bothering me and I have yet to find a resolution or I am not ready to face it, so let me focus on something else right now, such as shopping. It could be a promotion that I have been wanting but dare not ask for, so let me buy myself something to feel better first.

Control
There are things in my life that I can’t control at this point, like how the relationship between my partner with my parents goes, but what I can control is how much I choose to spend right now.

Instant Gratification
Self explanatory, the moment I buy something, I feel better already! I don’t need to wait for a year for my hard work to turn into the result that I look forward to.

1.Develop Taste
Develop taste in the area of interest, learn about the craft, brand or qualities that you appreciate it for. Just like learning about the different wine regions and notes that you like. There is no better or worse, just learning more about your own preferences and build your own library of differentiations in the craft.

2.Work hard and spend hard
As human, we love to be rewarded when we have worked hard for it, it gives us a satisfaction as compared to being handed an award that we know we didn’t put in any effort for. We want to our purchases to be a reward to self, that we have earned it. Then we appreciate it even more.

3.Buy what you truly love
It has nothing to do with what your family or friends thinks, it has all to do with what do you love about it. What characteristics or value do you see in the product, and the reason you are buying it is for the sole pleasure of pleasing yourself and not because it will in any way feed into the judgement of others.
